How to make Pretty Patterns

If you have a digital camera, it is easy, and great fun, to make unique patterns with your camera. First of all, this will need to be done outdoors, after dark, preferably where there are plenty of autos driving around. It may be necessary to ask (nag) Mom or Dad to take you into town.

To make patterns you will need to use your camera’s fireworks/ night mode, or “B” settings. If your camera has a manual override to keep the shutter open, that is also great.

Find a spot where autos pass by regularly.

Set your camera, and steady it, on a tripod or beanbag.

Just before a vehicle enters your camera field of vision, activate the shutter.

Take a few more similar shots.

The next series of shots will have you rocking the camera back and forth, ever so slightly. After the first few you will get the hang of how much movement is needed for particular effects.

Take the camera, and holding it at arms length, point at a stationary light. Now activate the shutter, and rotate the camera in small circles. At the end of the exposure you want to see swirling lights, and you will probably need to adjust the circle size. Try some more and see how quickly it becomes quite simple.

Now, try making circles as you pan from one side of the light to the other.

Experiment, and take lots of photos. You can delete the really awful ones at home, and keep the others to enhance and use with your favourite image editing program.
