Dogs have feelings and personalities. Some dogs are very passive, others are hyper, protective, angry, or anxious to name a few different types of dog personalities. Any dog can bite a person. This is how to take care of a dog bite, if it happens to you.

If a dog bites you, try to get the owner to remove the dog immediately. Try to stay covered, but do not make sudden moves or run if the dog is attacking. The dog will be encouraged to continue to be aggressive, despite the fact that would be one's first impulse. remember to try to cover up face and head and get the owner to remove the dog to a secured area.

Once dog is removed, assess the dog bite. If the bite did not puncture the skin, then take a cotton ball and alcohol and thoroughly clean the area.

If the dog bite has punctured the skin, take a cotton ball and alcohol and thoroughly clean the area. Put neosporin or bacitracin on wound and cover with band-aid. If wound is too large or deep, place clean cloth over dog bite to prevent dirt from entering.

Ask the owner for a copy of the rabies vaccination or the rabies tag number and expiration. Also, make sure you know first and last name of the owner of the dog, and their address.

Go to the doctor or immediate care if the dog bite has broken the skin. A doctor can thoroughly clean area, give stitches if necessary and give a tetanus shot. The doctor also has to fax the dogs information, especially rabies information.

The dog will be impounded for 10 days to determine if the dog has rabies. If the dog is up to date on vaccination, then most likely, you will not have rabies. Although rare in the US, rabies in humans can result in death if untreated.

The doctor may prescribe an antibiotic. In addition, continue to keep area clean and cared for. Continue antibiotic until it is complete.
