How To Feed Your Pet Rat

Domesticated rats have specific dietary requirements to stay healthy. They also love fresh treats and sweets - in moderation.

Feed your rat regularly and don't let food lie around too long. Two or three tablespoons worth of food each day per rat should be plenty.

Choose a block food that is specifically labeled for rats and/or mice. Block foods prevent selective eating and allow the rat the opportunity to gnaw and keep its teeth maintained. Rats have different fiber and protein requirements than hamsters, gerbils, or other pet rodents.

Place the food in corners or various locations throughout the rat's cage and allow the rat to forage for its food. This is natural behavior that provides exercise and entertainment for your rat.

Rats usually love a small, fresh treat each day. Give your rat a treat at the same time each day and it will be waiting and watching for you. Some great treats are: a bit of carrot, a raisin, a piece of banana (dried is better), a bit of apple, a peanut or pecan, or a few sunflower seeds.

If you are going out of town for a few days and must leave your rat at home alone, leave a good supply of food block in a bowl for your rat, and a large, full water bottle. Don't leave fresh or raw foods. Your rat will probably start hiding and storing the food away as soon as it is placed in the cage. Make sure the cage is cleaned thoroughly before you leave, with plenty of bedding or litter.
