Some dogs will try anything once - either as a chew toy or a snack- but there are many household items that are toxic for dogs. You should dog-proof for a new puppy much like you would make your home safe for a new baby.

Make sure all houseplants are out of reach. Many plants are toxic. Some outdoor plants are toxic also. You may need to consult your Veterinarian for a list.

Make sure all garbage pails and trashcans are secured away from puppy. Bagged garbage should be removed from the house as soon as possible.

Make sure all small objects that might be mistaken for chew toys are kept put away. Dogs have been known to chew or eat batteries, remote controls, small toys, stuffed animals, soap, etc. Provide safe appropriate chew toys made for dogs.

Make certain your dog cannot reach or have access to household and garage chemicals. Antifreeze is highly toxic to dogs but they often drink it because of its sweet taste. Other things to think about and put away are shampoos, oils, lotions, detergents, potpourri, and chocolate.

Do not feed your puppy table scraps; particularly chicken or fish with bones, high fat foods, or spicy foods. Dogs can choke on small bones, and high fat or spicy foods can cause serious indigestion or pancreatitis.
