Hermit crabs prefer a warm, humid environment. They thrive best at a humidity level around 70 and a temperature range of 70 to 85 degrees F - with 72 to 80 being ideal. There is a best way to keep them cozy.
1
Cover the bottom of the crabitat with an adequate layer of substrate. An inch or two is good. Varying the depth from one end of a large tank to the other is a great idea.
2
Use an undertank heater for reptiles or a heating pad on a low setting. A heating pad may require extra caution to be safe. You need to be careful of the cord and may need to wrap the pad in a towel or shield furniture under the pad.
3
Do not place the crabitat in direct sunlight or under a heat lamp. This can overheat the crabs and cause drying out.
4
Turn off the heat source when room temperature is adequate in order to prevent overheating. If crabs are going "naked", fighting excessively over shells, or have a musty smell or ooze check the temperature. They may be too hot.
5
Don't forget to check the temperature at night to make sure they aren't getting cold at night. Crabs are nocturnal and if they aren't moving around at night and don't appear to be eating or drinking they may be getting too cold.
