Many small pet owners aren't aware of the various grooming needs their pets may have. Here are the things to be prepared for.
1
Consider the best method for keeping your pet's home clean. Different types of bedding are more absorbent than others and the cheapest may not be the best value if you have to change it too often. A small amount of bedding that can be scooped out and changed frequently is better than a deep amount of bedding that gets heavily soiled before it's changed.
2
Buy a shampoo appropriate for your pet so that you can safely bathe it when it is needed. Male rodents often secrete a musk that may build up and cause a strong odor. Occasional baths will make your pet more pleasant to be around.
3
Consider a dry shampoo for keeping your pet clean during cold weather months. Drsfostersmith.com is a great website for all kinds of small pet supplies.
4
Use a flea and tick spray specifically for small animals. Outdoor rabbits or rodents in homes with dogs and cats may be vulnerable to infestations by fleas. There are flea sprays designed to be safe on rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.
5
Buy a small animal nail trimmer. Rodents' nails grow continuously just like yours. Some rodents can keep their nails worn down, but a rodent in a cage will probably need a nail-trimming now and then to keep them from scratching you or getting ingrown nails.
6
Consider a hairball remedy for rabbits; especially with long hair. Rabbits lick themselves and can get hairballs that can result in intestinal impaction.
7
Brush long haired pets regularly to prevent shedding mess, hairballs, and matts. A small slicker brush with soft plastic tips works well.
