Heartworms are carried by mosquitos. Heartworm larvae travel through the dog's bloodstream and the worms end up in the heart. A dog with heartworms may show few symptoms until the case if fairly advanced. Untreated heartworm disease leads to heart failure.
1
Recognize that a dog that is not treated with a heartworm preventive is at risk for heartworms if there are any mosquitos in your area.

Listen for breathing difficulties.
