There are some very logical reasons why pets fear the car. How to take away the fear.
1
Try not to make your pet's first trip in the car a trip to the Vet or Groomer's.
2
Make sure your dog or cat is secure and safe and has a good view. A cat is safest in a carrier, but if possible place the carrier where the cat can see out a window. You may need a box or something to bring the carrier to window level. Just make sure it can't fall or topple.
3
Take your dog or cat on a short ride to an interesting place, like a nearby park or just around your neighborhood. Let the window down to a safe level so your pet can smell the smells as well as see the sights. Don't let doggy jump out!
4
Give a special treat at the end of the ride. Next time it can be something to look forward to.
5
Take your dog or cat on happy car rides regularly. If they only get in the car to go to the Vet, they won't like it.
6
Don't feed your dog or cat a meal before a long car ride, but make sure they are given opportunity to drink periodically on a long trip.
7
Don't sedate a pet for a car trip unless absolutely necessary. The strangeness of sedation can make the pet even more fearful of riding the next time.
